The region of Smolyan is situated in southern Bulgaria, in the central part of the Rhodope Mountains, with area of 3231.8 sq.m. Smolyan adjoins with the regions of Plovdiv, Pazardjik, Kardzhali and Blagoevgrad, and also has a common south border with Greece. Pamporovo is located 260 km from Sofia and 85 km from Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second largest city and is serviced by the Plovdiv International Airport, which carries mainlycharter and package holiday flights. The airport is currently undergoing expansion to receive low cost carries when the open skies agreement comes into force on joing the EU. Pamporovo is also a very popular summer resort, being marketed as a mountains - and - lakes-resort.

The resort Pamporovo is located to the north of the district center of Smolyan (12 km), and the sport-tourist center under construction Perelik will be situated at only 10 km in the Perelik part of the Rhodopes. The imposing project envisages the connection of mount Perelik and Pamporovo with mount Mechi Dol until the town of Chepelare. The plan provides for the northern slopes of mount Perelik to develop as super-modern ski zone with 24 chair lifts and 55 km of new ski courses. The implementation of the project will form the Rhodopes as major tourist centre in Bulgaria, providing conditions both for winter and summer tourism. Pamporovo is a contemporary ski resort in the heart of the mountain massif the Rhodopes. It is located at 1650 m above sea-level at the foot of mount Snezhanka (1926 m). This is the most southern ski resort in Europe and it proved the sunniest Bulgarian mountain resort with approximately 120 sunny days and at the same time with stable snow during the whole winter season (from December through April). The combination of preserved mountain landscape, forests, a multitude of natural landmarks and moderate climate, predetermine the extremely favourable conditions for development of year-round tourism.
